The name of every car tells a story. Many - including some in the motoring press who ought to know better - have been wondering about the story behind naming the 812 Superfast. Here it is!

First off, the 6.5 litre V12 engine delivers 800 PS (789 bhp) of power. This is, by far, the highest power output of any front-engined sports car, ever! It’s the most powerful engine Ferrari has ever installed in a production model. Certainly something worth marking - hence the ‘8’.

All that power comes from the Motorsport inspired V12, which features race-honed F1 technology such as inlet ducts that change length in tune with the engine revs. This engine builds on the rich heritage of Ferrari V12s. The 812 Superfast picks up the mantle of the prestigious F12berlinetta and F12tdf.

The engine doesn’t just lend the 12 to the name, it does so much to make the car what it is. The real joy of the 812 Superfast is the smooth delivery of that power - as adept in normal driving conditions as when pushed close to the limits on the track.

And Superfast? Sometimes you just have to tell it like it is! Besides which, heritage matters to the Maranello engineers and designers, and to lovers of the Prancing Horse worldwide. The 812 follows previous proud bearers of the Superfast name: the 1956 410 Superfast and the legendary 500 Superfast unveiled in Geneva in 1964. Super and fast. What more do you need to know?

Maximum torque is 718 Nm at 7,000 rpm. 80% of that torque feeds in by 3,500 rpm. Combined with a dual-clutch transmission, carefully engineered gear ratios and shorter shifting times, the responsiveness is phenomenal - worthy of this exclusive flagship model.

If all of that isn’t enough to tempt you, the 812 Superfast is simply beautiful - inside and out.

The flowing lines create a super-sleek profile with a high tail reminiscent of the glorious 365 GTB4 of 1968. The interior maintains the exceptional on-board comfort and space of front-engined V12 Berlinettas, refreshed with a more radical look evoking elegance and pure racing pedigree.

Sometimes you don’t have to come up with a clever model name. Just let the car and brand heritage speak for themselves.
